Intel: worms of the wafers of 450 mm engraved in the extreme ultraviolet

An important investment between a manufacturer and the skier to accelerate and reduce the fineness of engraving of chips and processors of tomorrow.

Wafer 450 mmThe launch of the latest processors Intel Ivy Bridge serious 22 nm made aware the skier will have to find new technical solutions quickly for more finely burn again and again. Today, the exposure to extreme ultraviolet lithography is still little used and costly for the cross-country skier from Santa Clara. But the situation could change with the signing of a partnership with ASML.

In exchange for nearly $ 4 billion of investments to acquire 15% of the company ASML, Intel will make profit on the possibility to manufacture wafers of 450 mm and EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography. For the record, ASML is a manufacturer offering large machinery for manufacturing and engraving of processors and other chips in foundries.

"The transition from a size of wafer to another to usually reduce by 30-40% the cost of production, what we also hope from 300 mm to 450 mm to get a similar benefit." "Pus quickly we will do, faster we will get this benefit to improve the production, which will create tremendous value for our customers and our partners," says Brian Krzanich, Vice president and Director of operations for Intel.

Is that these investments are early stage and a production of chips etched in EUV development is planned for late 2013, while the 450 mm wafers will arrive late 2015... If the plan is proceeding as planned.

Orange with Intel Inside: we tried it!

Night Intel Geek So In # 6, we were able to get their hands on the new mobile Intel Inside to you our first impressions.

orange-san-diego-medfield-02It is a secret and it is even possible to get their hands on some tests of this new smart phone under Intel Medfield. It does not seem necessary to remind que he works not under ARM and x 86 instructions. Quite often in the sector, often said that Intel would not be able to produce processors also performing that those into an ARM architecture equivalent consumption while giving as much computing power. Giant Santa Clara showed no, and that is quite capable in this new mobile created jointly with Orange.

Before addressing our ownership, a little detail its sheet. Sometimes known as the Orange Santa Clara and then under the trade name Orange San Diego that is also clearly marked on the French store of the operator, Intel want to resume this name indicating that is simply called "Orange with Intel inside". Step from the simplest to retain customers, but the two partners did not wish to take the coverage on one or the other to take credit for this new mobile.

Then, this fact sheet said that in addition to run on Intel, the processor used is an Intel Atom Z2460 mono core running at 1.6 GHz supported by 1 GB of RAM. The graphic part is more classic and known enthusiasts because it is another that chip PowerVR SGX540 who team also the Samsung Galaxy S and Nexus. The display is provided by a screen of 4.03 inches without more precision on the technology used with a definition of 600 x 1024 pixels. Top of the screen hides a camera of 1.3 million pixels and a second rear protected by a prominent cache for 8 million pixels that can capture videos in 1080p, it also supports burst mode and stabilization, but autofocus seems not functional.

The chassis is 12.3 x 6.3 cm for 9.9 mm thick with a weight on the balance of 117 g, without forgetting the NFC chip which Orange wished to add his personal touch developing a home application to play with. The operating system which anime is an Android in its 2.3.7, version but Intel indicated that a portage to Ice Cream Sandwich was in progress with an update for the weeks that follow, juror promised. But this update is slow to arrive as blue developers preferred to wait that Google fixes the bugs in this new version to stable on x 86 in good condition so that the customer experience is the most perfect possible, us was reassured.

First of all, the first taken in hand, this smartphone gives a nice impression of lightness, finesse is for something and the first impression seems good. The lighting of the screen button is a little steep, it will be surely difficult in certain conditions to turn it on in a bus in full motion for example. The screen displays of beautiful colours and the videos are fluid in 720 p.

After 15 minutes of viewing, opening web pages filled with flash animation and other CPU-consuming activities, mobile heats up a little on the bottom, but this is correct and there is not place to ask if it will end up with a torch in the hands. No, the Intel processor appears well energy avoiding him dispel all efficient as much heat. If it is efficient, it appears also reactive in this version of Android. Web pages open quickly, the loading of Flash ads is also fast and reading them is immediate. We still only a problem of lag on the zoom of the pages, but we think it's more likely a problem of optimization of the browser of Android to the processor itself.

We have noticed - how to pass side? -, that the Android interface was completely altered to be the colours of the operator and many of its houses applications are present such as VOD, or even the system especially developed for the NFC to be used later, we were told.

In summary, this mobile is promising and Intel could very well return through the large door on the market of smartphones and tablets with a processor to the appetite of bird, but growing fast enough still bytes to provide a reactive product. We now look to have longer on hand to measure the complete autonomy of the smartphone but also to measure the user experience on the day the day with this type of processor in a mobile.

Intel pushes new batteries to reduce the price of the Ultrabooks

To lower the price of the Ultrabooks, savings on all components are being considered. Intel think this time in the batteries...

Yesterday, we return a series both on the issue of the cost of returns to Ultrabooks, under the prism of storage, since it is learned that the part of SSD equipped Ultrabooks would fall in the coming months. Today, Intel is the support by continuing to help builders partners to find the right solutions to lower the price of the Ultrabooks, in attacking this time in batteries. Intel therefore attempts to push two manufacturers new types of batteries, models known as the cylindrical batteries 16650 and prismatic lithium-ion batteries. However, since 16650 cylindrical batteries are produced in small quantities, prismatic Li-ion batteries are more likely to be selected. However talking about solutions that can be adopted by mass as from next year, since these models of batteries must be certified and small problems of ability to persist and must be resolved.

Sanyo Batterie 16650 Batterie Prismatic Lithium Ion

Left A, cylindrical batteries 16650. At right, a prismatic Li-ion battery.

16650 Cylindrical batteries have a diameter of 16 mm and can therefore a priori be used in portable computers to the design purposes. Provided exclusively by the Sanyo Japanese and Chinese BAK for the moment, they earn in interest among assemblers who worry however see this market be controlled only by two suppliers. To them, the prismatic lithium-ion batteries are more expensive to purchase but have an advantage: fineness of only 5 to 6 mm for blocks of 6 x 8 cm. Proposed by more providers, they are available in greater numbers and could receive certifications necessary for their use in the Ultrabooks more quickly.

Note that, despite everything, some manufacturers are beginning to work with these batteries on all small series. This is Acer that performs tests on its Ultrabooks with 16650 cylindrical batteries, and Lenovo IdeaPad 530 of which adopts a prismatic Li-ion battery.

Windows 8: the shelves and hybrid Intel for November?

According to some anonymous sources, the launch of Windows 8 should be around the month of November, when will emerge equipped with shelves of the new OS and an Intel chip.

CNet.com journalists are safe, a first range of Windows 8 tablet equipped with Intel processors will be on the market in November. According to one of the reliable sources of this writing, the time schedule for the launch of the Windows 8 stamped products is relatively tight. Microsoft wants to be the new OS on all fronts, with the support of Intel and AMD processors, as well as ARM chips, and this Office, but also tablets and laptops.

Intel Letexo

The prototype Intel Letexo, a ultrabook that turns into tablet...

This latter market, Intel would have ambitious plans. Namely offering a selection of at least twelve products with partners about Windows 8, including a good half of shelves x 86 operating a processor Atom platform Clover Trail (of the dual-core engraved in 32 nm). The other half would be hybrid products, namely touch laptop usable as of tablets.

Finally, CNet.com says that Intel is working hard on Bay Trail, the next Atom platform cache chip carved 22 nm (such as the Ivy Bridge) and which includes a smart 3 G / 4 G and a new graphical circuit. There is more than to wait for the formalization of these machines to see if the sources in question are right.

After Intel Medfield, it will be Merrifield and 6331

The roadmap of Intel on the processors for smartphones and tablets gives us info on the fineness of engraving and the radio of these new chips part.

Our colleagues from SemiAccurate have laid their hands on the roadmap Intel processors coming to smartphones. We already know this generation with the Intel Medfield and its three references Z2460 and Z2580 or the Z2000, all three engraved in 32 nm.

Intel_Merrifield_6331

SemiAccurate has obtained the names of the next two processors dedicated to tablets and smart mobile, Merrifield and 6331. The menu, the 22 nm for these two chips with a Merrifield coupled part radio of the skier, the Intel XMM 7260 that supports all transmission technologies current radio from GSM to the LTE.

For the 6331, also from the Intel R & D's radio part would be just as well off since it would be the Intel XMM 7160 that handles also the 2 G, 3 G up to 42 Mb/s and the LTE up to 100 Mb / s. The difference would be on the Bluetooth 4.0 support or energy management.

Intel is preparing already for the third generation of mobile processors under 14 nm lithography that will also be Haswell processors. Intel must now prove its solution compete with microarray under ARM in terms of performance and management of energy while offering attractive for manufacturers prices and of course his catch on the applications catalog, or an ARM emulator / x 86 worthy of the name to see the native x 86 applications flowered in the shops of apps of mobile operating systems.

After the Ultrabook, Intel tackles the Nettops with the NUC

A minicomputer to set on the back of a TV or screen, the vu? Intel is trying to democratize this type of computers, as it already did for the Ultrabooks.

At the Intel Platinum Summit 2012 held in London, the founder of Santa Clara has presented its NUC, or Next Unit of Computing. A the rikiki dimensions of 10 cm x 10 cm enclosure that houses a processor Intel Core i3, without more details. On interfaces offered by the NUC, Intel offers a USB port, a HDMI, a Thunderbolt port port and even the Bluetooth. This seems us still low compared to other manufacturers or to Raspberry Pi.

Intel_nuc_0000_IMG_2205.jpeg                  Intel_nuc_0001_IMG_2204.jpeg                  Intel_nuc_0002_IMG_2212.jpeg                  Intel_nuc_0004_Background.jpeg

The SweClockers Swedish were able to get their hands on it and we indicate that the NUC has a VESA 75 standard setting to be put in the back of a television or screen supporting this standard. As is the case for most of the nettops. Because that is what it is, if Intel seeks to reappropriate the market of the ultraportable with his concept of ultrabook, he may be trying to surgery similar marketing with its NUC on the market of the nettops...

For the moment, it is a simple concept and Intel said nothing about a possible marketing. Is probably the skier actively working with manufacturers to develop a standard, a specification and find partners. Follow .

Intel Lynx Point: more than RAID, but accelerated boot

Some information about the next range of chipsets Intel 8 series, Lynx Point, coming while the series 7, Panther Point, has just launched...

Lynx Point - Zol.PNG

Processors Intel Ivy bridge that integrate a new Intel HD 4000 iGPU, offer a good overclocking potential. Launched only a few days ago and already tested by us (the Core i7-3750K and i5-3570K), these chips are accompanied by a new series of chipsets, the Intel Series 7 Panther Point.

Even if this launch took place there is very little time, a few eyes are already turning to the next series for code Lynx Point. The introduction of the new range of processors that will be released next year called Haswell, will be also accompanied by a new series of chipsets, as you guessed it, the series 8.

If we stick to the latest information unverified on these upcoming chipsets, the Z85 will lose the RAID, a sacred loss for the unconditional support of clusters of hard drives. What is sure to be of interest to manufacturers of RAID controllers to create a new range of special motherboards RAID. It is also expected that the entire range will give the possibility to users of basic control technology RST (Rapid Storage Technology) according to three possible choices, energy efficiency, maximum power, or in between.

Last information about Lynx Point, the startup of the machine time reduction, more specifically, the time of loading the EFI and the detection of components and peripherals. Intel will offer, in association with a disc SSD of the caster to more quickly detect hard disks used for a much shorter load times that currently. This will of course work with the fondeur… disks There are still a whole year to discover these new chipsets, we still have some time before us.
